Permission

Permission is an important Juncture, especially for women of all ages. We are supposed to fit into a certain mold! In 1955, who gave Robert Rauschenberg permission to paint all over the log cabin quilt that was on his bed and then call it art by displaying it on a museum wall? Did he know that the quilt was someone's art? Or did he think he made it into art by painting on it?? In my own “Permission” quilt, I give myself permission to paint all over my own quilt and at the same time I allow myself to really take a look at Robert's intent—what was it? It had to do with the question, “What is Art?” Was he saying anything about the quilt or its maker? To him, the quilt was an ordinary everyday object. Was he simply hanging his painted bed on a museum wall and calling it art? Quilts on the wall? Hmm! I also give myself permission to include my thread painted cat face and to have it bulge out the way it is and the way it is not. Its OK!!
